Assistant Golf Course Superintendent

Job Title: Assistant Golf Superintendent

FLSA: Non-Exempt

Pay Grade: G4

Reports To: Golf Superintendent

Supervised Positions: None

 

Job Purpose: This position performs intermediate work in assisting the Golf Superintendent with the maintenance and development of the municipal golf course. This position reports to the Golf Superintendent.

 

Essential Duties:

  1. Provide a positive experience for golf course patrons.
  2. Assist Superintendent in daily operation of course maintenance.
  3. Schedule daily and weekly tasks for course maintenance workers.
  4. Assist with training maintenance workers in the technical aspect of course maintenance.
  5. Scout for disease and pests on turf, ornamentals, and trees.
  6. Perform chemical / fertilizer applications, manage records, and keep inventory of all products.
  7. Manage seed and sod projects.
  8. Coordinates maintenance staff in planting, cultivating, pruning, and caring for a variety of plants, shrubs, and trees.
  9. Perform maintenance and repair on irrigation and drainage systems, as well as preventative maintenance on pumps, controls, and water source(s).
  10. Coordinate repair and maintenance of equipment with mechanic.
  11. Maintain effective relations with patrons, employees, City staff, and the public.
  12. Work effectively with pro-shop staff to coordinate tournaments, outings, and other daily golf play.
  13. Regularly operates City vehicles or equipment and is considered safety sensitive.
  14. Other duties as assigned.

 

Skills Required:

  1. Thorough knowledge of golf course turfgrass development, care, and maintenance.
  2. Thorough knowledge of tools and equipment used in the operation of a golf course.
  3. General knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of golf course maintenance.
  4. Ability to assign and supervise the work of others.
  5. Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with the public and fellow employees.
  6. Excellent customer service skills.
  7. Knowledge of organizational policies and procedures.
  8. Knowledge of computer programs.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities:

None

 

Education and/or Experience:

High School Diploma or general education degree (GED); considerable knowledge of Golf Course and Turfgrass Management; and two (2) years supervisory experience in course maintenance; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Two- or Four-year turfgrass / horticulture management degree preferred.

 

Language Skills:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, customers, and general public.

 

Mathematical Skills:

Ability to add and subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

 

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out multi-step instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems by choosing from several known choices with frequent reliance on how problems were dealt with before.

 

Certificates, Licenses and Registrations:

Possess a TN pesticide applicator certification (Category 3) or obtain within one (1) year of employment.
